Each Measure Feature: Zarooni

FEATURE

The unique and colorful Emirati/British singer-songwriter Zarooni is a welcome addition to the pop-rock scene. Hailing from London, he writes soulful songs that deliberately and directly speak to universal experiences. If one were to imagine a mix between the poetry of Noel Gallagher and Coldplay's lighthearted, calm musicianship, then something like Zarooni would come into that individual’s mind. These attributes are all present in Zarooni’s new single entitled “The Kids Are Laughing”, which was released on Spotify on July 19, 2024.

Inspired by his children and the time he spends with them, “The Kids Are Laughing” is a relaxing acoustic ballad highlighting the positivity that spending time with children yields. However, it also has relatively somber lyrical elements that express the pain that comes with adult/post-childhood experience, including the realization that good moments end, living a difficult lie, and attempting to meet society’s standards of “cool” while sacrificing unique individuality. Still, the song’s major key, cheerful instrumentation, and mostly loving lyricism directly combat these more negative notions, revealing the philosophical wisdom that the contradictions face while maturing can be overcome by the pure love found in children and spending time with them.
