Each Measure Feature: The Last Gatsby

FEATURE

With a deeply personal reason for their return, The Last Gatsby is back with “Life Lessons,” an energetic track on perseverance. From the moment I started listening, the inspiration from other punk and alternative rock groups, like Blink-182 or My Chemical Romance, was evident in a great way. Knowing that The Last Gatsby played at Warped Tour in 2014, it feels like that was yesterday with how familiar the sound of their music is. However, The Last Gatsby had to go on a hiatus when their lead singer, Josh Paul, was diagnosed with brain cancer. With a third resurgence of this, the band decided to use that emotion as the driving force in their music.

“Life Lessons” is an amped up track with solid guitar riffs and a punk sound, but it’s got so much heart at its core. It’s personal to the band in a big way, especially since it’s their first material in years, but it’s also introspective and you can feel the resilience in the music. Lyrics like, “Give what you’ve got ‘til you’ve got nothing left,” are reflective of the hardships in life and the lessons everyone learns by going through them. It’s with this message that I feel everyone will be able to relate to “Life Lessons” on some level, even if a less emotional one. Between the lyrics and the upbeat, nostalgic punk music, “Life Lessons” is a fantastic journey for listeners to go on.
