Each Measure Feature: Gabrielle Stein

FEATURE

“Heart Me,” the new single by the Argentine/Californian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Gabrielle Stein, promises to be a real treat for the lovers of pop music due to the amazing musical alchemy performed by the artist on the track.

The song begins with a fast-paced yet atmosphere-altering and inviting verse in which the lyrics almost immediately switch to Spanish and back to English so perfectly that the transition is almost undetectable. The opening verse develops into a sequence of ascending sound frequencies blending smoothly with almost hypnotic echoing vocals and ad-libs. Every verse transcended into different sections, each invoking different emotional states from the listener. On the other end of each chorus lays a surprise twist for listeners as the artist took her time to properly analyse and systematically switch her mood and energy in each verse, giving the listeners a medium to relate to every verse, word, or pause in the song.

The song puts listeners in a state of self-reflection as it is based on how most people seek validation from other people and how social media has increased people’s dependence on external validation through “likes” or, as used in the song, “hearts.” How receiving more hearts increases the ego of those at the receiving end, while those who aren’t getting enough likes most likely feel inferior to those who do.

Gabrielle expressed her artistic finesse by simply and effectively relaying such a deep message without disrupting the soft, melodic flow of the song at any point. From the thundering bass drums to the angelic background vocals, the song, despite being only two minutes and thirty-two seconds long, is a masterpiece of skilfully blended sounds, a must-listen for lovers of pop, and a great recommendation for people who simply like listening to good music.
