Each Measure Feature: Field Trip Day
FEATURE
Alt-rock artist, Field Trip Day has released a self titled EP brimming with personality and fun. The collection of four tracks spans topics from dating apps to memory repression and does it all with endlessly clever lyrics and a distinct retro-rock sound.
Brooklyn-based Alexa Lynn Fecca (aka Field Trip Day herself) is a self-taught musician with only these 4 tracks released under her artist name and a modest social media following. Yet her artistic vision is crystal clear. Fecca describes her sound as, “a slightly distorted warmth that inspires escapism and romanticizes the mundane.” She’s right on the money.
Field Trip Day opens with a track called “The Void” in which Fecca celebrates diving headfirst into her favorite brand of toxic lover. The upbeat track highlights her warm, textured vocals as she entices with pickup lines like “you’re the embodiment of chaos, can I be your muse” and “if you’re the void, I’m dropping right in your mouth.”
We later see the other end of the romantic spectrum in “Gotta Act Dead” when Fecca laments finding a potentially real connection on a dating app. “I gotta unmatch your ass, yeah I’m never calling back,” she drawls.
However, it’s the third track, “Nonsense Holiday,” that contains the most memorable of her vibrant lyrics: “Your love’s like a piece of melted cheese—smothers me in warmth and sticks to me.” It’s a kid-like declaration of love that feels as if it could be the theme song to an early 2000s family sitcom. What is a nonsense holiday? “It’s a personal getaway, a combination of both our brains,” according to Field Trip Day.
With its distinct sound and personal storytelling, it could be argued that the whole EP is a bit of a nonsense holiday between Fecca and the listener. When all four tracks are through, you’ll feel as if you spent 12 minutes really getting to know Field Trip Day.
