Who says doctors cannot be artists? Certainly not Sukh, who is currently both of these. He is a Wolverhampton-born and Manchester-based singer-songwriter who has found much success in the world of music, especially gigging live; he has supported the likes of Basia Bulat, Nizlopi, Beth Rowley, Stu Larsen, and Natsuki Kurai, completed several UK tours in 2019, performed at Kendal Calling multiple times, and garnered support from BBC Radio 2 and BBC Introducing. Sukh also has a decent amount of studio experience under his belt, releasing many singles, two EPs, and two albums. His latest album, which was released on September 20, 2024, is entitled “Heading East.”

“Heading East” is a folky pop record that features simple yet catchy instrumentation and vocals. It is easy on the ears and very accessible all throughout its eight tracks. At times it can be fun and bouncy, while other times it is slower and more somber. The pacing of the tracks on this record is driven by the percussion and the bass, which are fairly dynamic for a track of this genre. The guitar is also a very present component on the songs of this record; mainly electric guitar is played, and it has a very country-esque tone in most instances of its playing. The vocals also match this tone with a slightly country-esque accent. However, the vocal melodies are more pop-dominant than country, so there is a unique and nice synthesis there. Despite the clear folk foundation of “Heading East,” this album is not afraid to incorporate an electronic synth that adds an 80s-pop sound to the tracks it is featured on. Overall, “Heading East” is an ambitious, brave, and very fun album that fans of both folk and pop can enjoy this fall and beyond.
