Shane Rennison’s newest EP, “Live at the Outlier Inn 2,” captures even more of the musical magic from a January 2024 retreat in the Catskills. A native of Upstate New York, Rennison gathered his band of top-tier musicians in Woodridge to find fresh inspiration for his recent album, IRRATIONAL.

The headlining track, “Irrational,” gets a bright reimagination, glowing with joy from jamming with fellow artists. Rennison reflects on this intimate atmosphere in an interview, explaining, “The magic of these sessions lies in the collective energy of everyone involved.” His next track, “I Think It’s You,” reminisces on a messy breakup and its fallout. The Outlier Inn version gives the track a more blissful sound, making “after all this time, I think I found what the problem was” feel like a happy resolution to a hard chapter of life. The live recording of the next song, “Losin’ You,” lets the instrumental shine through in various solos. Listening to the soulful strumming of Eamon Lebow’s guitar, you can imagine yourself sitting around a campfire in the woods of the Catskills with the band. The final track, “Hey Hey Hey,” is the perfect concluding note to this heartfelt EP. Janna Pelle sings straight to the soul with her moody synth piano, all while Rennison delivers his timelessly tender vocals. 

This innovative EP gives the listener a peek into Rennison’s musical inner-workings. The band has elevated the remastered tracks beyond genre categorization, blending pop rock with folk and indie signatures that could only have been produced in such an inspiring environment as the Outlier Inn.
