Each Measure Feature: Reina Mora
FEATURE
Emerging as a Puerto Rican from Los Angeles, Reina Mora’s newest single “Weeds” is a touching and emotional track of ethereal sounds and commanding vocals. Mora is a singer-songwriter, performer, and activist whose music doesn’t fit the box as she dabbles in Rock, Pop, Folk, Latin, and even Country genres. With her grandfather, a Puerto Rican Bolero, being a role model to her, Mora’s career in singing began even before she could speak. Now, she writes music with other artists and performs her music solo or with her Folk Duo, Willow Crest. She shares her love for collaborative creativity through non-profits such as WriteGirl and SONA. Her big heart and authenticity are evident, especially in “Weeds.”
“Weeds” was released on June 20th, her late mother’s birthday, to commemorate her mother’s belief in her as an artist. Produced by Dylan Emmet, “Weeds” is a low-tempo, piano-led song whose powerful vocals shine throughout every verse. Written while Mora endured a divorce, the song emanates a feeling of emptyness, but hopefulness in making it through the weeds. The music video, released July 11, mirrors exactly that feeling. Using the contrast between solemn desert and bright flowers, Mora communicates the gloomy yet optimistic context in which the song was written.
