Recently released on September 13th, “Breadcrumbs” is an intriguing new single from Mery’s Key that touches on love and loss in a comforting way. The track has a sound inspired by artists like John Mayer, Coldplay, and Natalie Imbruglia. Two things really stood out on the single: The bass guitar and the progression. The former created a unique arrangement in the music that complemented the intimacy of the lyrics and vocals. The progression could be split into story and instrumental, with the latter seeming to add something every thirty seconds that drew me in as the song continued.

As for the story of the song, “Breadcrumbs” tells the tale of someone that’s strung along in a relationship that never commits, giving them just enough attention to give them hope. It’s a sad story and one that I know many people who can relate to. What I love about “Breadcrumbs” is that the main character realizes they deserve more and finds confidence in their own value by the end of the song, which is balanced with the rise of the instrumental. “Breadcrumbs” is a single with a powerful message, and one worth hearing, that could easily fit into a TV soundtrack.
