THE INTERVIEW

If you had to create a Mount Rushmore of inspiration, what four individuals molded the artist you are today?
That’s so tough, I’d have say John Mayer for his guitar playing, Adam Lambert for his insane vocals, Gavin DeGraw for his songwriting, and Kelly Clarkson because she can sing any genre and I love all kinds of music.

Were there any personal experiences or stories that influenced the creation of the music video, and if so, how did they shape the final product?

This song is very light and romantic, and I wanted the video to have a lot of contrast between the visually darker scenes representing the more concerned/emotional aspect of the lyrics and the bright swaths of sunlight representing the encouragement of the chorus lyrics and the lightness of the vocal melody.

If you could sum up the essence or overarching message of the music video in a few words or phrases, what would they be, and why are those concepts significant to you?
This song and video are about being there for the people you love, and about letting them know. It’s important to me because I find that I don’t always remember to let people know how I feel about them, and the best way for me to express that has always been through song. In this case, it’s about being there for my friends and loved ones just as they’ve been there for me.

Can you discuss any unique or unconventional techniques or choices you or the producer made during the song's creation process that helped to shape its distinctive sound?

I think one distinct choice I made was to make the chorus almost like a run-on-sentence. If you read it out, it really is one long phrase that really hammers home the idea of the lyrics overall. Vocally too, I wanted to keep the chorus melody really light and sweet with a bright falsetto tone that really sells the heartfelt lyrics. With the instrumentation, I wrote the song on guitar and it really felt right to have the basis of the song still based around a guitar hook – with big percussive hits during the verses to add some momentum to what’s being sung.

When it comes to the songwriting on this record, what is the message you want to get across to your listeners?

The message I want to spread through my songwriting on this single and on my upcoming album is one of positivity. I think no matter what someone is going through, music can really be a source of comfort. My songs on this upcoming album are about friendship, familial bonds, early moments of romantic relationships, having a good time, and about holding on through the hard times.
