THE INTERVIEW
If you had to create a Mount Rushmore of inspiration, what four individuals molded the artist you are today?
Wow! That's a really great question! It's so difficult to boil it down to only 4 artists, but If I had to choose I would say SADE, Stevie Wonder, Sarah Vaughn and Whitney. Special shoutout to Erykah Badu, Chaka Kahn, Hall & Oats, Norah Jones, Jill Scott, Amy Winehouse and I'll stop here lol!
Were there any personal experiences or stories that influenced the creation of the music video, and if so, how did they shape the final product?
For the music video, I wanted the viewer to have a clear understanding of what the song is about. I wanted the story to come through and bring the lyrics to life. Although, I do love abstract / artistic videos very much, for this one, I wanted to go for something more direct and illustrative. The story is based on a real life experience about a young single mother, up against many challenges and her unrelenting strive forward towards a better life for her and her daughter.
What was the most rewarding aspect of making the music video, and what message do you hope viewers take away from it?
It was rewarding to work with a very talented team of individuals, from the director to the cinematographers, set dec and the young actors. Seeing the story come to life and being acted out was very emotional and I still get moved every time I see it. I really hope people experience the emotion and intention that I inteded them to, that through the struggle there can always be hope and a promise of a brighter day.
Can you share any interesting anecdotes about the song's development with your co-writers or producers?
This song was litterally one of the first songs I wrote when I started the project. My musical partner had the chords pattern saved on a loop in his keyboard for several years and decided to play it for me and our other collaborator one night. We decided to jam on the song and add other instrumentation to it...and when I sang the first words out of my mouth were 'She's a girl who walks with her head held high, scars on his skin she wears like a crown' I immediately got chills and knew there was something profound brewing. I recalled the times I worked at a shelter and ecountered a particular young single mother. She left an unforgettible mark in my memory and i wanted to capture that spirit in my song. When I played the demo of the rough recording to my producer Chin, he looked at me and all he said was "Wow"
When it comes to the songwriting on this record, what is the message you want to get across to your listeners?
I want to give people the sense of hope that no matter where you are in life, even if you're going through the hardest of times, it can get better. Never lose hope and never give up on yourself. There is love and support around you, just keep your head up and walk tall. Nobody can take away your power. You are loved.
