Each Measure Feature: Hannah Johnson
FEATURE
Capturing the essence of her life’s journey so far, Hannah Johnson’s debut EP, “Lifetime,” is an introspective comfort. Hannah’s love for music and playing various instruments comes through on the blend of soul and indie pop. Listening through the EP, I felt hints of Destiny’s Child with modern pop infused to create a relatable collection of tracks. There’s a good reason that Johnson’s vocals and songwriting has gotten praise from platforms like A&R Factory and Plastic Magazine: She has a unique approach and perseverance to see through her end result.
Each song on the EP serves as insight into Hannah’s life, evoking emotion and memories with her voice. Several times, I found myself reflecting to a previous time in my own life that related to the track. “Lifetime” starts with “Slow Motion,” which has very few instruments beyond the funky bass guitar that stays constant throughout and Hannah’s vocals. The song had a great rhythm that carried into the next track, “Mine, Pt. 2.” There was a relaxation and upbeat vibe to this track, followed by the soft, romantic feeling I got from “I Do.” The introductory keys reminded me of a wedding dance.
The fourth track on the EP, “Push Me Away,” was one of the most relatable for me. With lines like, “I ain’t perfect but neither are you,” Hannah wants the relationship to work and asks not to be pushed away. It’s a heartfelt concern, and all four tracks converged on the final, titular track, “Lifetime.” This told a beautiful story of wanting to argue with the other person for a lifetime. It’s something that we all hope to be able to do, and Hannah conveys the message with ease. Overall, “Lifetime” is a comforting look at Hannah Johnson’s life that delivers soothing indie pop in a refreshing way.
