FEATURE

“Dunkelrot” is the latest of Vincent Krennerich’s signature lofi hip hop tracks to enjoy your day to. As a musician and producer, Krennerich combines classic jazz with modern rhythms. His previous 10 releases are meditative, sonic expressions of daydreams, nostalgia, and flow state. This first release of the year, rounds out his catalog by delivering emotional depth and quiet exhilaration.

The instrumental piece opens on the clear, bright tones of a piano. The chords flutter gently into place like the awe-inspiring onset of a brand new feeling. The sound lightly washes over the listener, suspending time for just a moment before the arrival of a saxophone calls us back into the material world. The sax’s joyful and simple melody suggests the swelling energy of a thought. The feeling is no longer just a feeling, it is conscious now too.

A drum kit and bass make an abrupt entrance and, in their wake, the keys and sax are newly energized. In this lofi arrangement, Krennerich has created pockets of dimension. He takes a purely hypothetical feeling and walks it through the real world. “Dunkelrot” in Krennerich’s native German means “dark red.” Indeed, the song captures the bold excitement as well as the mysterious and deep complexities of the color.

Krennerich himself suggests pairing this track with “an evening stroll.” I might also recommend soaking it in with your morning cup of coffee. “Dunklerot” is an awakening; it is blood flow. It demands very little of the listener but as you nod your head to the beat and sway your shoulders with the saxophone, “Dunkelrot” will ease you into a state of refreshed readiness.
