FEATURE

What London and Dublin-based electronic alt-pop twin duo ROOUE do so well is mesh gritty electronic production with dark pop-infused stylings. They use glistening harmonisation to lay their souls bare and provide an honest and raw look into themes of love, loss, and empowerment through vulnerability. Raised in a household full of music and creative expression, Ro and Lulu each had a music therapist for a mother and a “jazz nerd” for a father. They were inspired by their mutual love of a variety of genres such as soul, jazz, traditional Irish music, and experimental electronic pop.

‘Overdraft’ by Rooue is a powerhouse of a single, the second from an upcoming debut EP, and a narrative borne of the ashes of emotional abuse at the hands of a past partner. Written from a place of violent candor and undiluted vulnerability, the track encapsulates that ‘ah ha’ moment of sudden and withering clarity as you give your everything—only to discover it wasn’t enough: emotional overdraft. The track is a powerful testament to love’s resilience and the light at the end of the tunnel for anyone who may find themselves in the agonizingly dark places that it sings from. A story that is achingly universal, so bare and open the track feels less like a hand of comfort. We have no doubt listeners will love this track.
