FEATURE

“FANTASY,” the new collaboration between KAYLA and Regan Pierce, is a single that captures a moment of passion in all its complexities. The lyrics are straight to the point. Lines like, “our bodies together, just hold me tight” and “taking all my clothes off, you’re making me go crazy” tell the story of two people inescapably drawn to each other and their physical exploration of that attraction. Expressions of ecstasy, shame and love all intertwine in the lyrics.

The instrumental centers around the tinny, lo-fi sound of a plucked guitar—or is it a harp? The sound has been processed just beyond recognition, elevating the track slightly above reality. Paired with a sparse bassline and an lively drum kit, the r&b instrumental is both energetic and repetitive, sharpening the listener’s focus in on the moment at hand.

Pierce served as the producer on this project though he does also have a background as a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He hails from Esbjerg, Denmark and draws inspiration from artists like SZA, Kendrick Lamar, and Brent Faiyaz. He describes “FANTASY" as a love song that “promises to evoke feelings of passion and nostalgia.”

Collaborator KAYLA contributes vocals that infuse both vitality and softness into the mix. Her rhythmic singing hints at a rap background and at the same time, she also slides through notes and mumble her lyrics in a way that draws the listener closer. Her vocal stylings are reminiscent of Jhené Aiko but the ethereal ad libs that KAYLA lays down over the choruses are melodically fresh dynamic. She elevates the euphoria of this track to an intoxicating state.

This exchange of variations on vibrancy and tenderness between the instrumental and the vocals are a testament to the collaborative capacity of Pierce and KAYLA. “FANTASY” will leave listeners eager to see these two together in the studio again.
