THE INTERVIEW
If you had to create a Mount Rushmore of inspiration, what four individuals molded the artist you are today?
I feel like there have been so many situations and encounters in my life that have inspired and shaped me as an artist. It's so hard to narrow it down to just 4. I would say life in general has probably played the biggest part.
Were there any specific experiences or events in your life that influenced the song's lyrics?
Because of the pandemic, I had to cancel my small tour in 2020, so I decided to focus mainly on songwriting with/for other artists. It was going well and at one point I was talking to quite influential people in the industry. I was sure that this was the moment when things would take a turn and help me take the next step in my career. Well... it turned out that life had other plans. Haha. That's the thing about expectations. Right? I was fucking frustrated. Long story short - I realised I didn't want it to be the way it was - investing my resources, time and creativity to build the legacy and careers of others - while only a handful of people recognised the contribution and hard work of songwriters. And although that opened some doors for me and was fun for a while, I wanted to be my own artist again. One day later, I wrote the lyrics to "Hollywood".
Can you share any interesting anecdotes about the song's development with your co-writers or producers?
So... I wrote the lyrics to the song in early 2022 - had a session at Riverside Studios in Berlin with Craig Walker (Archive/ Craig Walker And The Cold) and we just recorded a little idea. Originally I wanted this song to be the outro on my record. With just a verse leading into the pre-chorus and ending in an explosive long chorus. A few months later, when I played the first demo to my producer, Leif insisted that it needed a second verse. Today I'm really glad he convinced me! But damn. It took forever... The thing is. When I think a song is done, it's super hard to add a new element. Because to me, it feels like I've said it all. I tried everything. For months. But no chance - I was super blocked.
In the end, during a session with Leif in the studio, I messaged Craig (he was still living in Berlin at the time) to see if he wanted to meet for a coffee and a cigarette and help me finish the record. So we met 20 minutes later. And the new verse was written in about 5. Sometimes all it takes is a different perspective.
What was the biggest takeaway or lesson you learned while creating this song?
Some songs are for the audience, other songs are for the artist.
How has your recent growth as an artist influenced the direction of your future work?
I don’t think the growth will influence the direction of my future work. Well.. I hope so! haha.
