THE INTERVIEW

If you had to create a Mount Rushmore of inspiration, what four individuals molded the artist you are today?

Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Lizzy McAlpine, and Broadway as a whole

Taylor taught me about relationships and heartbreak in a poetic sense, Ariana taught me about having a pop sound and showcasing range, Lizzy McAlpine taught me about a more folk storytelling approach to lyricism, and Broadway as a whole is the baseline for storytelling for me.

Were there any specific experiences or events in your life that influenced the song's lyrics?

I wrote the song after reading the “Carrie” novel for the first time, as I was going in for “Carrie White” for the musical, so I wrote it to feel closer to the character. I actually ended up landing the role but the production sadly didnt end up going up.

Can you share any interesting anecdotes about the song's development with your co-writers or producers?

When I sent the demo to my producer Justin I told him I wanted this song to have an eerie horror feel. He added a fluorescent light bulb sound which you hear throughout the whole duration of the song which I feel like adds an effect, and in the intro you hear a trickling suspenseful sound which reminds me of “Insidious.” There’s even a sound effect in the bridge that I wanted to resemble the prom scene in the movie where Carrie starts destroying everything. I think the laughter in the second verse also adds to making it feel immersive as Carrie is getting taunted and laughed at.

What was the biggest takeaway or lesson you learned while creating this song?

I think the biggest takeaway was stepping out of my comfort zone and trying a new sound. Most of my music isn’t upbeat and this felt like the first song that was a little more upbeat which is different for me, which felt really exciting. I also really loved collaborating with Justin on this as my producer, I think we work really well together, and we just had so many laughs.

How has your recent growth as an artist influenced the direction of your future work?

I think with especially putting out two EP’s, it’s made me really excited to start constructing an album. I think I am learning more about my sound and the type of stories I want to tell, and I’m also learning what my listeners like.
