THE INTERVIEW

If you had to create a Mount Rushmore of inspiration, what four individuals molded the artist you are today?
That’s interesting… I’d say Kurt Cobain, DMX, Lil Peep and Edgar Allen Poe.

Were there any personal experiences or stories that influenced the creation of the music video, and if so, how did they shape the final product?

Of course, to name a few we were inspired by Donnie Darko and the prodigy’s music video for “smack my Bitch up.” The song itself is inspired by a need for vengeance and an experience I had with failed love that made me question a lot. I usually try to write from a place of sub-consciousness but this was slightly more direct.

If you could sum up the essence or overarching message of the music video in a few words or phrases, what would they be, and why are those concepts significant to you?
I’ve always believed that art should be up to interpretation. But if you could take away the essence of “payback” I’d hope that it makes you feel confident, resilient and somewhat mischievous. Overall payback is a journey of life, purpose, love, death and revenge… it’s up to the listener to fill in the pieces of how they’re all connected.

Can you discuss any unique or unconventional techniques or choices you or the producer made during the song's creation process that helped to shape its distinctive sound?

Skold has some magic tricks when it comes to songwriting and production. I definitely learned a lot. Even just on a pure sonic level. One interesting choice we did was the juxtaposition between angelic singing textures and evil sounding guitar chords… I felt it really brought to life the inner turmoil that I was experiencing.

When it comes to the songwriting on this record, what is the message you want to get across to your listeners?

That you should always be yourself, and music is healing.
