Lexi Berg just released the winter ballad to cry your eyes out to. Set to a simple but emotional piano progression “Fall Like An Angel” tells the story of someone who was mistaken for perfection and who inevitably fell short. Berg cries out in her signature delicate-yet-raspy vocals that her “wings glitched” and she “crashed into the ground.” You are struck with both a sort of spiritual, seasonal magic and a heart-wrenchingly deep truth.
“Fall Like An Angel” was co-written with hitmaker Jim Eliot (Ellie Goulding, Will Young, Kylie Minogue) who also produced Berg’s recent single, “Lonely Satellite.” In contrast to that upbeat folk-infused track, “Fall Like An Angel” contains much stillness and contemplation.
Berg says, “I wrote Fall Like An Angel as a reflection on the fragile moments in life when we fall but find beauty in the descent.” She adds, “the song is about embracing vulnerability, especially in the colder, quieter moments of winter.”
Fans of Joni Mitchell’s “River” who find both comfort in the peaceful wintertime imagery and heartbreak in the deep, ugly truth behind the lyrics will be drawn to the complexity of this tune. Distant Christmas bells, and something that sounds like an angelic choir whispering in the background are paired with a truly dynamic vocal performance by Berg. Part despair and part hope, this song feels like standing in a field gazing upon utter stillness save for the little bit of snow drifting down from the heavens.
“I’m sorry you thought I was an angel,” she croons. “Thank god you’re here to catch my silver tears.” Thank god Lexi Berg is here to sing us through the dark months.
