Each Measure Feature: Lauren Ash

FEATURE

It doesn't take long to see the kind of energy that Lauren Ash wants to bring us with her new single, Whiplash. Not even a second into the song, powerful guitar and drums fill your ears, pumping you up and getting you in the right headspace to hear Ash's story. The song details a horrible car crash, the shock that it brings, and even the frustration, anger, and regret that follows. Of course, Whiplash shouldn't be taken so literally.

The car crash in the song is a metaphor, representing the ending of a relationship and the emotional whiplash that brings. Ash wrote the song in response to a breakup she went through in the fall of 2024. Not long after this, Ash ended up in a literal car crash, and the connection formed from there. The car crash metaphor connects incredibly well with the ultimate story of the song and, in my opinion, perfectly encapsulates the feeling that comes with a sudden breakup. You're left feeling disoriented, hurt, and confused, wondering what you could have done differently, if, to quote the song, you even should have been driving. You have, for lack of a better word, whiplash, and the process of recovering from it, much like an actual, physical car crash, is a slow and grueling one.

If this song is a part of Lauren Ash's recovery, either from the breakup or the crash, I wish her well. Regardless, I want to thank her for such a great piece of music.
