Tempo Talks: A Conversation with Kyler Mils

THE RELEASE

Meet Kyler Mils, the young French vocalist bursts onto the music scene with a captivating presence. Coming from the blend of Martinique and Portugal, Kylers musical trek began in the landscapes of Deux Sèvres, France. It was there that he first discovered his passion for music while playing the family piano. Drawing inspiration from celebrated artists like Mylène Farmer, Madonna, Lana Del Rey and Troye Sivan, Kyler independently creates songs with a timeless charm in the comfort of his bedroom. With influences as his cultural background suggests, Kyler Mils emerges as an artist poised to shape a distinct and captivating narrative through the universal language of music.

Kyler Mils latest single takes us back, to an era paying tribute to the captivating sound of the Mellotron. “Dressing Up to Go Nowhere” unfolds as an expression of love capturing the mix of emotions that come with waiting for someone you miss to get back home. With its melody and emotional feel the song paints a picture of solitude, where one finds themselves all dressed up but with nowhere to go. As the vintage tones of the Mellotron blend into the composition, Kyler Mils invites you to immerse yourself in this lonely atmosphere, creating a resonance that reflects the artists connection to this feeling. This track is a voyage through time and emotions, poised to strike a chord and deeply resonate with everyone who has experienced longing and anticipation in their lives.

THE INTERVIEW

If you had to create a Mount Rushmore of inspiration, what four individuals molded the artist you are today?

If I were to create a Mount Rushmore of Inspiration, I think I would put Mylène Farmer, Madonna, Lana Del Rey, Weyes Blood and Troye Sivan. They really shaped the artist I am today and I don’t think I would have made music if they didn’t exist. Mylène is my biggest source of inspiration, I'm such a big fan of her and her music. And I think you can tell by listening to my most cinematic song called “Healed”, as it’s basically a movie within a song – just like her songs and her music videos. I’m proud of the person I have become thanks to these five artists that make great music, and I hope someday I’ll make music as good as theirs!!

Were there any specific challenges or breakthrough moments during the production of your new single that had a significant impact on its final form?

Concerning my song “Dressing up to go nowhere”, the biggest challenge that I had to go through was to be the most authentic as possible when I recorded it. It’s a very personal song, portraying solitude and the waiting that you experience when the loved one has left you for good, and you stay by yourself in your apartment, all dressed up to go nowhere. So, it was hard to be true when I sang this song, to transmit the emotions I felt while writing it. I think that, with this song, I crossed a threshold that led me to a land of emotions I can’t even describe…

Can you share insights into the collaborative process behind the creation of your latest single, including any notable contributions from producers, co-writers, engineers or featured artists?

My three singles, including “Delta”, that I haven’t talked about yet, were completely made on my own, in my home studio. Making music by myself is a great way to keep control and be 100% myself, without singing someone else’s words. So, if I had to share insights into my creative process, I’d say that the composer, the writer and the engineer in me worked hand in hand, and each part of my personality brought something new. It’s really fun to work by myself, but I think I might start to work in team for my next releases.

Can you articulate the impact or impression you hope your new song leaves on listeners long after they've experienced it for the first time?

My only purpose as an artist is to make people cry or dance. Maybe cry while dancing, I don’t know! So, when my listeners will hear my new single, I hope they will shed a tear, and stare at the window while drinking a hot chocolate at night… Something dramatic! To be completely honest, I hope new listeners will step into my universe and that there will be more people in the Kyler Mils galaxy.

Looking ahead, how does the release of this single pave the way for future projects, and are there any hints or clues about the direction your music might take in the coming months?

I think that the three songs I have released for now represent well this universe I was talking about. I can make you dance, think or cry with my songs. I can announce that I will release an EP in 2024 that will reunite these three ideas. I can’t say how it’s going to be called yet, but I can assure you are going to love it!

These three tracks paved the way to my future singles – that are coming really soon – and I think it can only go deeper and deeper into my mind…
