James McGowan Ensemble Shares an Undeniable GRoove On Their Album “Reaching In”
THE ARTIST
The James McGowan Ensemble consists of 13 musicians who are based in Canada’s National Capital Region. It is a captivating collaboration that combines the Modasaurus jazz fusion quartet, with the versatile Quatuor Despax string quartet. Led by James McGowan, a pianist, composer and educator, the ensemble blends of jazz elements goes beyond traditional boundaries. The harmonious fusion of McGowan on piano, four talented horn players, the poetic spoken word contributions of former Ottawa, English Poet Laureate Jamaal Amir Akbari, Petr Cancura (Ottawa Jazz Festival Artistic Director), Mike Tremblay on the tenor saxophone, Mark Ferguson on trombone, and Ed Lister (JUNO-award winning) on trumpet, all create a unique listening experience. Under McGowans leadership and with the talent of its members, this ensemble takes audiences on a musical journey that seamlessly integrate classical sophistication with vibrant jazz influences. The latest album, from the James McGowan Ensemble titled "New " beautifully combines elements of jazz music showcasing the ensembles exploration of collective challenges. With a collection of 16 tracks each named after an obstacle the album tells a captivating story of conflict and healing. From the fragmented soundscapes in "Internal Conflict" to the melodies led by the cello in "Acceptance " and the empowering rhythms found in "Time to Rise, " "New" takes listeners on a profound journey through exquisitely composed music. Serving as the installment in a musical saga, this album sets the stage for their future release, "Reaching Out " slated for 2024. By blending jazz styles with spoken word poetry by Jamaal Amir Akbari, The James McGowan Ensemble creates an experience that encourages introspection on themes of self discovery, acceptance and community. Thanks to support from Canada Council for the Arts Concept, to Realization grant "New" is not an adventure; it is also a testament to collaboration and artistic vision.
