Each Measure Feature: FAERYS

FEATURE

Control is only the second release by duo producers FAERYS, and it’s a smasher. A year since their debut track Nova Scotia, a banging electronic rock anthem, the mysterious pair seem to have tightened their successes and spiced it up with new textures and emerging vocal talents. Their nameless partnership is mysterious and refreshing and focuses all ears (and eyes) on the music alone, and boy is there a lot to focus on. Their sound for this track is halfway between shredding rock and nostalgic early 2000s video game music—it's exciting, fearless, and intoxicating.

FAERYS started with the goal of creating sounds outside of the two producers’ comfort zones, and it seems they’ve struck gold. Where do we start? This song feels like jumping into a chase sequence, starting with its powerful rhythmic guitar riff and lyrical flow gurgling to life and pulsing forward until it ends with a bang. Add another vocalist, synthy backgrounds, and maybe a few more guitars— a lot is going on. Now I’m usually one to say less is more, but this song defies that motto. I think the expert mixing is to thank for that. Each sound adds a hearable texture that all together conjures a landscape that might be half urban sprawl and half sci-fi wasteland.

Another surprise was the somewhat steady vocals throughout. After the first 30 seconds, the vocals are present for the rest of the track, two different voices from two different styles, and, as it turns out, two different continents. The cool and spacious ethereal voice alternates with whippy rap segments, a shivery fusion that’s hard to forget. The voices dance around each other with the same steady presence of the guitar, unraveling a hopeful and empowering message of change and resilience. It’s happy news that the same voices will be heard on the upcoming four-track EP.

I was delighted to hear Control and enter the neon burst of energy that is FAERYS. I stopped listening to music like this a while ago, and this song reminded me that I had no good reason to stop.
