Each Measure Feature: Emilio Gonzalez

Emilio Gonzalez’s “Dance For You” is an upbeat single that tells a beautiful, bittersweet story.  The track’s lyrics tell a ballad of two friends reminiscing over their late friend Mikey, starting with them going to a bar. Being close to Mikey’s house, they go there to dance and drink as if he were still alive. It’s a somber story, but the increased tempo and happier instrumentals in the chorus makes it seem more like a celebration of life than sadness over the loss of their friend.

What stuck out to me the most was the progression of the lyrics. What starts out as two friends remembering their friend gives way to shared grief as the drinks start to set in. It’s been a while since the friends saw each other, and their reconnecting reminds them that Mikey’s memory still lives with them and their dancing. “Dance For You” is their way of remembering their friend and being there for each other. Gonzalez finds a great balance of joy and sorrow that most people who have experienced loss of someone close can relate to, which I assume is almost everyone.
