FEATURE

Singer-songwriter Ella Clayton has just released her new single “Come Pass the Time” in anticipation of her upcoming 2025 album. It is a thoughtful and tender tune comprised only of piano, some strings, and Clayton’s breathtaking vocal performance.

The song begins with a request: “come pass the time, say that you’re mine, curb indecision.” As Clayton describes it, “Come Pass the Time,” “invites listeners to embrace presence and connection in a world so often ruled by distraction.” Inspired by the profound communication we experience not only through words but through presence, and touch, she paints a picture of intimacy as time slows down between two people.

In the verses, where the lyrics tell of her yearning for mindful connection, the piano accompaniment is minimal. The space between notes is drawn out as if Clayton is holding her breath waiting for the gift of truly attentive closeness. Then, as she sings “passing words like presents, searching for meaning, late into the evening,” the piano pours forth and strings luxuriate alongside. The swelling chorus delivers an experience of fullness and gratitude.

Clayton has already developed a bit of a name for herself. Based in East London, she has already performed at major festivals and at international venues in Paris and Los Angeles. Those familiar with Clayton’s previous work, know her voice to contain multitudes. Her singing is as much casual and light as it is deep and weighty.

As her vocals weave through the sentimental accompaniment, “Come Pass the Time” manages to feel both wistful and encouraging. Maybe that’s Clayton’s point—lean into it all; sit with the unpleasantries so that you will be present for all the good too. You certainly wouldn’t want to miss something like “Come Pass the Time.”
