THE INTERVIEW

If you had to create a Mount Rushmore of inspiration, what four individuals molded the artist you are today?

Prince, Fleetwood Mac, the Beatles, and Mazzy Star.

Were there any specific experiences or events in your life that influenced the song's lyrics?

On Your Mind is based on my experiences of having miscommunications with someone I care about. Wondering how to connect with them and asking why there was such emotional distance at that time. On Your Mind questions how to care about someone while not being able to relate on some level.

Can you share any interesting anecdotes about the song's development with your co-writers or producers?

Nicky Swedin and Cormac Liotta sent the track over to me and at first I was surprised by the country twang. I asked for more electric guitar and they took the note and added it in. I trust them implicitly and I think we struck the right balance.

What was the biggest takeaway or lesson you learned while creating this song?

A song can be short and sweet.

How has your recent growth as an artist influenced the direction of your future work?

With every session, I learn so much from the producers, and I’ve learned to trust myself and my instincts over time. When I come to the studio with confidence is when I do my best work.
