FEATURE
Brandon S.C’s first release of the year, “Diary,” is a pop-y, guitar-driven reflection on love and seasons of change. The single is his fourth release and the simplicity of the track showcases a more vulnerable side of Brandon than listeners have heard before.
“Diary” opens to the rich, warm tone of an acoustic guitar. The pleasant polish to Brandon’s sound is immediately evident and when he begins to sing, we can hear that he possesses a kind of calm professionalism. Brandon’s vocals are sparkling clean and radio-friendly. He demonstrates deft vocal control across his entire range throughout the course of the song— even sprinkling a slight edgy angst into his lower register.
True to it’s title, the lyrics feel like the almost unstructured stream of consciousness one would commit to a diary. “Take me back when we first met, I wrote a song for you, you liked it,” he sings. As we listen, he reminisces his way through the entirety of this relationship until he comes to the conclusion that “all the lust and hurt and pain and love and healing from it” is just too much to hold on to. Ultimately, it’s time to move on. Brandon describes the song as “an anthem for leaving behind the old me and embracing new beginnings.”
He notes the importance of infusing both nostalgia and relief into the song but this track contains even more than that. There is both melancholy and hope in the lyrics. The emotion in Brandon’s voice up against the easy breezy sense of closure in the melody offers us a deeper experience. “Diary” is a tune bursting with feelings that beg to be witnessed.
